Caribbean islands are one of the favorite destinations for American and European tourists when thinking of traveling to a place to relax, to enjoy fantastic landscapes and spectacular weather most of the year.
Each of the Caribbean islands has its particular charm that makes it unique, but undoubtedly one of the most outstanding for its beauty and lifestyle is the island of St Barts. With much to offer for its visitors, it was voted the best island in the Caribbean in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards 2020.
As the saying goes, love is born from sight, and to fall in love with St. Barts, as we are, you must visit the island. Here are the best ways to get to St Barts and discover the treasures that our island has for you.
To get to St Barts you have two main options, arrive by air at Gustaf III Airport (SBH) in St Barts, or anchor in the port of Gustavia. Whichever of the two options you choose, they are an adventure in themselves and well worth experiencing.
There is one detail you should know about getting to St Barts by Plane, Gustaf III Airport is one of the smallest airports in the world. The runway of the St Barts Airport is only 2,170 feet long, so it cannot accommodate aircraft for more than 20 passengers. There are no direct commercial flights from major cities in the United States or Europe, but you can find a private plane that meets the necessary characteristics to land at St Barts.
If a private plane is not an option for you, you have nothing to worry about, as there are very viable options to live the incredible experience of landing at Gustaf III.
The most popular option to get to St Barts if you are coming from America or Europe, is to make a stopover on our neighboring island of St Marteen. International flights to St Marteen can arrive at one of two airports on the island: Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) on the Dutch side or Saint Martin Grand Case (SFG) on the French side of St Maarten.
Once your flight has arrived in St Marteen, Winair and St Barths Commuter offer flights to St Barts, almost every 30 minutes. The flight from St Maarten to St Barts takes about 15 minutes. Besides these two options to fly to St Barts, in St Maarten it is relatively easy to get a charter flight, if you want to know more about this option, contact the Le Barth Villa Rental desk, and we will guide you on the best option for you.
At Le Barth Villa Rental we recommend you to plan your trip in advance and keep in mind that Gustaf III Airport only receives planes before sunset, so it is important that you check the arrival time of your flight to St Maarten and you can be sure that you can leave for St Barts the same day.
If you are coming from North America, the following commercial Airlines can take you to St Maarten landing at Princess Juliana International Airport: Continental Airlines, United Airlines, Sun Country Airlines. American Airlines, Spirit Airlines, Air Canada, Jet Blue, Delta Airlines, Air Transat and American Airlines.
On the other hand, if you fly to St Maarten from Europe, Air France, Corsairfly, Caribbean Airlines, Jet Blue and KLM land at Princess Juliana, while Air Caraïbes lands at Grand Case (SFG).
Another option we suggest is, if you are visiting us from the United States, Canada or Central America, airlines such as Delta, Westjet, United Airlines, American Airlines, Jet Blue, Air Canada, Air Transat or Spirit can take you to San Juan, Puerto Rico and from Luis Muñoz Airport (SJU) take one of the three daily flights that Tradewind Aviation offers to get to St Barts.
The flight to St Barts with stopover in Puerto Rico is also possible for European visitors traveling on Lufthansa, Alitalia, British Airways, Air France, Iberia, Air Berlin, KLM, Finnair and Condor.
Please note that this option is only viable from October 15 to May 15.
There are also regional airlines that you can check if you are coming from another part of the world that we have not mentioned and check their connectivity with other Caribbean islands. These are the main regional airlines with flights to St Barts:
Winair (regular flights)
Air Antilles Express (regular flights)
Tradewind Aviation (regular and charter flights)
Windward Express Airways (charter fights)
St Barth Commuter (regular fights)
As mentioned the arrival at Gustaf III Airport is an adventure in itself and the maneuver required to land may not be pleasant for everyone. If you are one of those who prefers more peaceful adventures, perhaps arriving on a ferry from St Maarten to St Barts will be the best option for you.
Crossing the 15 miles that separate St Maarten from St Barts will take you between 45 minutes and an hour, while you can wonder at the exotic scenery of the Caribbean waters and the small islets that will appear in your way. Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky and enjoy the fish and other marine species that inhabit the Caribbean.
There are two companies that make the ferry trip from St Maarten to St Barts:
Voyager 3 Dreamliner at 8:50 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. and 6:55 p.m. from Marigot on the French side of the island.
Great Bay Express departing from Bobby's Marina on the Dutch side of St Maarten.
With ferries departing to St Barts at 7:30am and 5:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and only 5:30pm on Sundays.
As with flights to St Barts, you can also get a charter boat to bring you to our island without being tied to a specific schedule. Our Concierge desk will always be happy to recommend the most convenient service for you. If you wish we can also book your charter boat or ferry directly from St Maarten to St Barts, just ask for it.
Now you know how to get to St Barts and enjoy your next vacation in the Caribbean. If you want to come to the island on your next vacation, but you are not sure which Villa you want to book in St Barts, trust us, and at Le Barth Villa Rental we will find just what you deserve.
